Who's Who in the Ecommerce Business Infographic

Get an insider's view of the ecommerce industry's biggest (and smallest!) players with Lexity's new infographic.

Who's Who in the eCommerce Business

Everyone is selling online and ecommerce software solutions are now offered everywhere. Overall, senior shopping cart Yahoo! Small Business strives to maintain its fraction while sophomore software platform Magento races to keep the lead—yet no company has won a majority of this fragmented space. On the rise are WP e-Commerce, the popular blog plugin, and BigCommerce, with its solutions for both low- and high-end merchants. And while retail shopping is the focus for many of the top players in ecommerce, enabling transactions on content-focused sites has opened opportunities for shopping carts like Übercart and VirtueMart.

In the top 1 million sites...Which eCommerce businesses Hold the Most Market Share?

A fragmented market

22% of the market is held by two platforms:

  • Magento - 12%
  • Yahoo! - 10%

Only 4 years after its launch in 2008, Magento’s ecommerce software platform has climbed to the top—overcoming old-guard players like Yahoo! Stores.

Coming out of of a downturn, veteran shopping cart Yahoo! Small Business is running second to Magento in market share, but has more of the top stores in its stable.

78% is split by everyone else:

  • VirtueMart - 8%
  • Volusion - 8%
  • Zencart - 8%
  • osCommerce - 8%
  • Miva Merchant - 7%
  • Bigcommerce - 5%
  • WP e-Commerce - 3%
  • Ubercart - 3%
  • Shopify - 1%

No other ecommerce providers have captured even 10% of the market, with the vast majority holding less than 3%. Interestingly, with 5% of the market, BigCommerce is an ecommerce software solution that is successful at both ends of the market—using their Interspire shopping cart to gain ground on the high end and a simpler product for the low end.

Platform age is not a factor

Magento: 4 years old, launched platform in 2008
Yahoo!: 14 years old, launched small business platform in 1998
Magento’s speedy rise to the top proves that it doesn’t take long for top performing platforms to catch up to established players.

In the top 1 million sites...Whose Online Store Platform Is on the Rise?

WP e-Commerce is the fastest growing software solution among the big (and small) players in ecommerce hosting—users easily add shopping carts and more to their blogs with this popular plugin. BigCommerce is a close second in growth and Magento comes in third.

Growth in the last 6 months

WP e-Commerce (+63%)

How do high-traffic WordPress bloggers take their websites to the next level? Increasingly they add the WP e-Commerce plugin, making this the fastest growing transactional platform on the web.

Bigcommerce (+57%)

Bigcommerce’s growth has skyrocketed up to the cloud its software solution offers, thanks to the smart strategy of playing Interspire together with cloud hosting.

Magneto (+37%)

No one is surprised to see Magento’s swift progress up the growth charts, it matches their overall lead in ecommerce market share, but....

Volusion (+18%)

…Volusion’s uptick in growth is unexpected, thanks to heavy marketing by this ecommerce software solution. It was rumoured that it would be picked up by eBay, who bought Magento instead.

Ubercart (+15%)

Gaining ground in a similar way to WP e-Commerce, Übercart is an open-source ecommerce shopping cart that is popular with websites on Drupal.

Content Sites Expanding into Ecommerce Puts 3 Companies in the Top 10

#7 VirtueMart

This free, open source ecommerce solution is Joomla users’ leading online-shop download. Joomla is a relative newcomer to the CMS scene, first released in 2005.

#8 Ubertcart

By focusing on the Drupal community, the Übercart ecommerce platform is both a growth standout and a software solution that isn’t targeting the retail shopping space.

#9 WP e-Commerce

Offering a free and easy way for WordPress users to sell on their sites, fast-growing WP e-Commerce also sells a paid “Gold” upgrade to their plugin that adds even more features.
